Sexual Health: Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD's)

Human Papilloma Virus (HPV)/Genital Warts

HPV is a viral condition and there are currently no cures. This virus often has no symptoms causing most people to not realize that they actually have the virus. If it does show symptoms, it appears as a soft, reddish lesions in the genital areas. This virus is associated with cervical cancer in women.

Chlamydia

Chlamydia, while curable, is often the hardest sexually trasmitted disease to detect. When symptomatic, it causes painless erosions that can cause burning sensation upon urination, bleeding or abnormal discharge, and/or itching. If not treated this can lead to Pelvic Inflammatory Disease and female infertility.

Genital Herpes

Genital Herpes is a viral condition and there are currently no cures. Genital Herpes cause painful or itchy vesicular lesions in the genital area. These lesions are recurring and may be dormant/silent between episodes.

Gonnorhea/Clap

Gonnorhea is curable with antibiotic treatment. Some people have no symptoms, but in others, the symptoms can show from 5-30 days after exposure. In males, symptoms include a burning sensation upon urination, discharge from penis, painful and swollen testicles. In females, symptoms include a burning sensation upon urination, increased vaginal discharge, and vaginal bleeding between periods.

Syphilis

Syphilis is curable with antibiotic treatment. The disease presents itself in three stages:
  • Stage 1: a small, firm and painless nodule appears at the site of infection from 10-90 days after exposure. The nodule, known as a chancre, will heal by itself, but if this is not detected and treated, this progresses onto stage 2.
  • Stage 2: Skin rashes and lesions appear after the chancre has resolved or as the chancre heals. The rashes can occur throughout the body, including on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet. These rashes are itchless. The rahes and lesions resolve by themselves but if no treatment is given at this stage, it then progresses onto stage 3.
  • Stage 3: Internal damage starts to occur that may show up later in life, causing nervous, musculoskeletal, and mental damage. If this is severe enough, it can lead to death.
The most common sexually transmitted diseases in males are HPV (Human Papilloma Virus), Herpes, and Gonnorhea.
