Uterine Fibroids/Leiomyoma, Myoma, Fibroma
These are the most commonly diagnosed and benign tumor of the pelvis. This is very common, occurring in 40% of women over the age of 40 and is also the most common reason for receiving a hysterectomy. In fact, Uterine fibroids account for 83% of 600,000 hysterectomies.
Risk Factors
The most common risk factors for Uterine fibroids are never being pregnant. Also, black women have 2-3 times higher incidences of Uterine Fibroids than women of other nationalities.
Warning Signs
The most common symptoms of Uterine Fibroids are heavy menstrual bleeding, abdominal distortion, pelvic pressure, lower back pain, infertility, frequent urination, constipation, frequent miscarriage, and premature labor.
Treatment Options (from least invasive to most invasive)
- Wait and See. How big are the fibroids and what are their growth rates? Are they causing any health problems?
- Drug Therapy
- Uterine Artery Embolization (UAE)
- Myomectomy
- Hysterectomy
