Prostatitis
The prostate gland is an important part of the male reproductive system that secretes most of the liquid portion of semen.
Prostatitis is when the prostate gland is inflamed due to bacteria and it can either be acute or chronic. Some of the symptoms of an acute prostatitis is having flu-like symptoms like fever and chills, low back and genital pain, burning pain with urination, more frequent urination at night, blood in the urine, and joint and muscle pain. Acute prostatitis is diagnosed from the symptoms described but a blood test may be performed to test for increases in white blood cells. The white blood cells are increased since the body produces more to fight infection. The doctor may prescribe antibiotics to fight the bacteria, which resolves the problem quickly. If the problem is not resolved quickly, a prostate abscess may be suspect. Some of the symptoms of prostatic abscess is pus in the urine, painful urination, frequent urination, fever and elevated white blood cells.
Men with chronic prostatitis may have no symptoms or have symptoms of back and genital pain, sense of urinary urgency and frequency, and painful urination. Chronic prostatitis can be caused by bacteria but is also linked with urinary tract infections. Treatment consists of a lengthy course of antibiotics but relapses do occur. Herbal supplements such as Saw Palmetto and Stinging Nettles are natural remedies for prostate diseases.
