Chiropractic: FAQ

What is chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a health practice of keeping the body healthy and performing at its ultimate potential by maintaining the alignment of the spinal column and keeping the nervous system functioning properly. Since the nervous system controls every cell, organ, and function of the body, keeping it working properly is very important.

Who needs chiropractic care?

Everyone. Everyone. Everyone. Whether it be infants, children, mom, dad, or grandparents. The birth process for the infant is very traumatic. The body is contorted and squished through a small opening and its very important after the birth to check the infant and make sure that its bones are in proper alignment. Everyone has a nervous system and spinal column. If these aren't working properly then this can cause pain, discomfort, and disease. This can lead to more severe health problems later in life if it is not corrected.

What is a Subluxation?

Subluxation is a misalignment of one of the bones of the spine. The misaligned bone does not move as much as the bones above and below it. It is "fixated".

What is an Adjustment?

An adjustment is a term used to describe how chiropractors correct subluxations. The chiropractor may use their hands or use instruments in applying the adjustment. The adjustment is a fast force into the area of subluxation that for the most part does not cause any pain, but if the area is already tender or painful to the touch, then the adjustment may cause some discomfort.

What is that "cracking noise"?

Between each bone in your body is fluid that keeps the joint lubricated. The fluid contains gas that is released when the adjustment is performed. Sometimes when the gas is released it causes an audible sound to be heard and other times no noise is heard, like when you open a can of pop and the carbonated gas is released.

What is VSC and what does it mean?

VSC is the abbreviation for Vertebral Subluxation Complex. When the spine is out of alignment and the nerves are irritated, there are consequences. For instance, the area may be painful to touch, the area may be red and irritated, the muscles may be tight and you feel some discomfort. All of these things are factors in the Vertebral Subluxation Complex.

How often should I see a Chiropractor?

You may have heard that once you go to a chiropractor, you have to keep on going. Well, this all depends on what kind of care you want. There are three basic types of chiropractic care.
  1. Condition-based/Relief Care
When to see a chiropractor for certain health complaints and then stop going because the health problem improved and you no longer have pain. For example, you come in for back pain and after a couple of weeks, the pain gets better and you decide that you don't need any more care and you stop coming in, even though the underlying problems hasn't been resolved. This is better than no care, but this is a stop-gap measure. It's like have a hole in your car tire that you patch up. You know the fix won't last but the problem has been taken care of for the short term.

  2. Correction/Health Care
When the health problem has been resolved with no more pain and the underlying problems have been corrected, restoring your body to its maximum function. The length of care may depend on the severity of your condition, how your body heals, and the condition of your body-mentally, emotionally, and physically.

  3. Wellness Care
When you come in for maintenance care after your health problem has been resolved and you want a regular check-up in keeping your spine and nervous system working properly-like getting your oil changed regularly.
